With the theme “Women Weathering Climate Change: Governance and Accountability, Everyone’s Responsibility,” Valenzuela City joins the nation in celebration of Women’s month that was officially opened today at the grounds of Bulwagang Geronimo Angeles located at the New City Government Complex.

Pastor Girlie Palileo of World of Grace Church led the opening prayer during the launch done with the Flag raising ceremony for Valenzuela City Government employees. “We pray for all the women especially those who suffered and still suffering from different form of abuse that they may find justice and continue to build hope and courage to move on and be better persons,” she uttered.

According to the Philippine Commission on Women, the theme was conceptualized in consideration of the recent disasters and calamities experienced by the country and the impact of climate change observed and experienced globally.

Annually celebrated during the month of March, this year’s commemoration spearheaded by the City Gender and Development Council is pack with various activities for the service of the women sector in the city.  The celebration started last March 1 with a free medical mission in partnership with Mercury Drug  Corporation dubbed as “Bigay Lunas 2012” held in Northville 1B Covered Court in Barangay Punturin.

1stDistrict Councilor Cora Cortez, City Council Head of Women and Children Committee, imparted the attendees with women power spirit leading them in shouting “Mabuhay ang mga Kababaihan!” (Long live the Women!) that echoed at the City Government Complex.

Activities lined up for the whole month are:

Globally celebrated, Women’s month was made official in the Philippines under several laws and declarations owed to the late President Corazon C. Aquino, such as Proclamation No. 224, series of 1988, “Declaring the first week of March of Every Year as Women’s Week and every March 8 as Women’s Rights and International Peace Day;” Proclamation No. 227, series of 1988, “Providing for the observance of the month of March as “Women’s Role in History Month,” which designated the National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women (NCRFW), now Philippine Commission on Women (PCW), for coordination of the nationwide observance; Republic Act No. 6949, “An Act to declare March eight of every year as a working special holiday to be known as National Women’s Day,” to encourage government and private sector employees to participate in Women's Day activities; and Proclamation No. 1675, series of 2008, “Declaring the month of March of every year as “National Women’s Heart Health Month.”
 
The celebration has become a venue for planning and discussions on various gender-related issues, with activities, such as United Nation’s Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (UN CEDAW), the Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA), the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the Philippine Plan for Gender-Responsive Development (1995-2025) the Framework Plan for Women and  the enactment of Republic Act No. 9710, the “Magna Carta of Women.”
