There should be no demolition if there is no relocation.
This is the ideal scenario should families are forced to move out from their abode that is due for demolition. In the case of 78 families that are bound to be displaced from Imperial building in barangay Karuhatan, they are initially provided cash assistance to temporarily rent a shelter, on October 4, 2016 at the Valenzuela City Social Hall.
The Manila North Tollways Corporation (MNTC), through the City Government of Valenzuela, provided financial assistance amounting to Php9,000 to fund for their house rental for three months, before they are transferred to Disiplina Village in barangay Bignay.
During the three-month period, the city government will oversee to the construction of their relocation homes with the help of the National Housing Authority (NHA).
Mayor REX Gatchalian assured the families that if within the projected construction period the units are not yet for occupancy, the affected families will again receive cash assistance to pay for their rent.
The pressure to vacate the eight-storey apartment was triggered by a finding from the Office of the Building Official declaring the building condemned and therefore unsafe to live in. A voluntary demolition order was issued on September 14.
Maria Magdalena Sol, one of the residents at the Imperial building, said that the demolition saddens her. She shared, “I’ve lived here since I was a teenager until now that I have two children. It has been 36 years and now we have to go, but I understand that this is for our safety.”
The Imperial building will be affected by the Manila North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) Project Segment 10, which is a 5.65–km. 4–lane divided (2x2) elevated expressway connecting MacArthur Highway and C–3. It will utilize the existing PNR railroad tracks that cut across Valenzuela City and Malabon City.
