To alleviate the ongoing traffic congestion in the City caused by the gradual relaxation of health restrictions, Valenzuela City Mayor WES Gatchalian announced on December 17, 2022, that single motorcycles are allowed to pass through the bike lanes starting December 25, 2022.

Under the City Ordinance 1064, Series of 2022, single motorcycles are now authorized to use the bike lanes installed along the MacArthur Highway from Monday to Friday. Following the said approved ordinance, motorists who will occupy the bike lanes were reminded to run with a maximum speed of 20 kilometers per hour (kph). Thus, Mayor WES reiterated that tricycles are still prohibited to travel on the said highway.

In his remarks through a video message, Mayor WES said, “Ito po malamang ay Christmas gift na rin natin sa ating mga motorist. Papayagan na pong dumaan ang mga single motorcycle natin sa designated bike lane natin sa MacArthur Highway.” [This is probably our Christmas gift to our motorists. Our single motorcycles will now be allowed to pass through our designated bike lane on MacArthur Highway.]

Rico Fernandez, 25, a government employee, shared his insights on the passed ordinance and how it affected his travel time going to work. “Maganda ‘yung benefits [ng ordinance]. Tulad ko na araw-araw pumapasok, maiiwasan ‘yung pagiging late. Kahit mabagal ‘yung patakbo, may tulong pa rin kasi kahit papaano nakakasingit ka sa traffic,” He said. [The benefits (of the ordinance) are good. Like me who goes to work everyday, being late can be avoided. Even if the speed limit is slow, it is still helpful because I can somehow cut in to traffic.]

The signed ordinance serves as a response of the city government to address the worsening traffic flow on its main roads. Through this, the road is now efficiently utilized for the purpose of public convenience.

It can be recalled that Valenzuela City strictly implemented the use of bike lanes along MacArthur Highway (from Marulas to Malanday) last January 3, 2022.
