The traditional lighting ceremony of Valenzuela City’s symbolic Christmas tree, the “Tree of Hope,” paid homage to the volunteers who have been instrumental in making the K to 6 In-School Feeding Program a success, last December 7, 2012 at the Valenzuela City Hall Grounds.

Dubbed as, “Tayo ang simula ng Pasko, Alagang Valenzuelano alay namin sa inyo,” the tree-lighting ceremony was attended by members of volunteer groups from Ateneo Center for Educational Development (ACED), Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) Federation, and WIN Mothers Club.

Mayor WIN Gatchalian recalled how the volunteers of the K to 6 In-School Feeding Program made wonders in helping him address the malnutrition issues of the children in the city, “How can one sleep soundly knowing that 6000 children in our locality are hungry each day and are malnourished for not eating the right kinds of food? It is through the selfless dedication exemplified by our volunteers that these children are now gradually showing signs of improvement on their health conditions.”

The Tree of Hope was lit at around 8:30 p.m. Highlights of the ceremony include the dramatic multimedia presentation of “Volunteer” (a short musical documentary about the routine of volunteers from humble backgrounds), fireworks display, and gift giving.

Congressman Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito, Representative of the Lone District of San Juan City, commended the spirit of volunteerism that WIN Mothers Club willingly embraced. As an expression of support to the good governance employed in Valenzuela City, he announced that he shall augment the local government’s funds for its worthwhile programs, if ever he makes it to the senate on next year’s elections.
