President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. visited Valenzuela City to assess the impact of Typhoon Carina and the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat), which caused severe flooding in Metro Manila, July 25, 2024.

Typhoon Carina entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on July 20, 2024, bringing heavy rains that peaked on July 24, resulting in chest-deep floods in some areas including Valenzuela City after the La Mesa Dam overflowed.

President Marcos, accompanied by Mayor WES Gatchalian, inspected  the Valenzuela City Command and Coordinating Center (VCC3), located in the ALERT Building, Barangay Malinta and Malanday National High School, which currently shelters many evacuees. The President distributed relief goods to affected residents and praised the city's efforts in managing the crisis.

During his visit, President Marcos emphasized the need for improved communication between dam operators and local government units to ensure timely warnings and preparations for downstream communities. He noted that better coordination could significantly enhance the effectiveness of disaster response measures.

The National Capital Region (NCR) has been placed under a state of calamity due to the severe flooding caused by the heavy rainfall. This declaration aims to expedite relief and recovery efforts across Metro Manila.

Mayor WES Gatchalian expressed gratitude for the President's visit, highlighting the importance of national support in disaster recovery efforts. The visit underscored the government's commitment to improving disaster response and resilience, with both local and national officials working together to address the immediate needs of the residents and plan for long-term solutions to prevent future flooding.

As of 2:00 PM today, the city has seen 5,623 families and 21,289 individuals evacuated to 81 evacuation centers across 33 barangays. Malanday National High School is currently sheltering 351 families and 1,629 individuals. The Valenzuela City government, in collaboration with national agencies, continues to provide assistance to affected families and is working on long-term solutions to mitigate future flooding.

The City Government of Valenzuela remains committed to the safety and well-being of every Pamilyang Valenzuelano. Efforts are ongoing to ensure that all affected families receive the necessary support and resources to recover and rebuild. The city extends its deepest gratitude to all volunteers, government agencies, and partners who have come together during this challenging time to provide aid and support.
