By way of preparing the students for the upcoming school year, the Valenzuela Reading Camp 2024 commences at 42 public elementary schools in Valenzuela City; providing learning assistance to assessed non-readers and frustrated readers from the primary school level. The launch occurred at Pio Valenzuela Elementary School and Caruhatan West Elementary School, on July 10, 2024.

Running on its 9th year, the Valenzuela Reading Camp kicks off once again to provide thorough training for students who were assessed as “non-readers” and “frustrated readers” by the Schools Division Office Valenzuela through the Philippine Individual Reading Test (Phil-IRI).

Valenzuela Reading Camp is one of the key components of the multi-awarded Education 360 Degrees Investment Program, which aids students facing difficulty in reading and comprehension. With reading regarded as an essential skill, the City Government of Valenzuela initiated this remedial reading class to develop further their capacity to read and understand correctly and to heighten their critical thinking skills.

A total of 1,246 beneficiaries are expected to participate in the Valenzuela Reading Camp, with which 78 students were assessed as non-readers, while 1,168 were frustrated readers. The students participating in the reading program were from the primary school level, mainly Grades 3, 4, & 5.

Prior to the launch of the Reading Camp, there were 64 public school teachers and 128 teachers’ aides from PLV who will facilitate the program, underwent a comprehensive teaching training last July 4, under the mentorship of Synergeia Foundation, in partnership with DepEd Valenzuela and the Vice Mayor’s office.

In his message, Mayor WES Gatchalian expressed his high hopes for the success of this year’s Reading Camp. Citing a significant decrease in the number of non-readers and frustrated readers in the past years, “Nakikita naman po natin sa datos na talagang malaking tulong nito sa pagbabasa, paghahabol, at paghahanda ng ating mga learners sa paparating na pasukan.” Mayor WES also mentioned that learners who will complete the reading sessions of the program shall receive gift certificates.

In addition, the City Government will also provide free school kits and 2 sets of uniforms per student for the upcoming Balik Eskwela 2024.

Valenzuela Reading Camp constitutes ten (10) days of training in reading and comprehension and will run from July 10 to July 23, 2024.

Continuing the tradition of offering free remedial classes for struggling students, the Valenzuela Reading Camp is a testament to the City’s vision to make reading skills a right of every Valenzuelano and not a privilege.
