In conjunction with Valenzuela City's 25th cityhood celebration, the Valenzuela City Government, led by the Valenzuela City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (VCDRRMO), facilitated an extensive hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training at ALERT Multi-Purpose Hall, February 14.

Approximately 1,100 participants joined the said training who came from different sectors of the city. This includes Barangay rescue volunteers, private company employees, staff from private and public schools, uniformed personnel from the Philippine National Police (PNP)  - Valenzuela, and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP). 

This year’s Citywide CPR Training aims to provide basic knowledge to city staff from various sectors about rescue and providing first aid. This is also one of the initiatives of the local government in producing disaster-prepared and equipped employees who serve as force multipliers and frontliners in times of need.

Prior to the said training, VCDRRMO led a coordination meeting and orientation last January 31, 2023, in preparation for the citywide Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training with the members of the Technical Working Group (TWG) for disaster rescue – consists of Barangay volunteer rescuers, public and private teachers, doctors, and several departments of the local government of Valenzuela. 

The conducted training was in pursuant to the Republic Act 10871, also known as the “Basic Life Support Tin raining in Schools Act.” It is also dubbed the “Samboy Lim Act,” honoring the PBA Legend who collapsed during an exhibition game in Pasig in 2014. He was reportedly unconscious for 23 minutes before receiving a medical intervention. As read in Section 3 of the act, says that “all public and private basic education schools operating nationwide to provide their students with basic life support training through the use of psychomotor training in an age-appropriate manner.” Furthermore, cited from the Administrative Order (AO) 155 s. 2004, it states that “The Basic Life Support (BLS) Training is mandatory to all health workers.”

This activity marked the 4th Citywide CPR training conducted since its initiation in 2017. The city government hopes to sustain this program to produce more disaster-prepared city employees.
