The city government of Valenzuela released the list of 97 official evacuation centers in the 33 barangays of the city which are mostly public schools, covered courts and barangays halls, and a few private schools and churches.

The list came after the Department of Education (DepEd) Division of City Schools - Valenzuela issued on July 4 Division Memorandum No. 170, Series of 2013 which instructs district supervisors and school supervisors to prepare public schools in the city for use as evacuation centers should the need arises.

With the list and the DepEd memorandum, City Mayor REX T. Gatchalian gathered school and barangay officials for a consultative meeting in hopes of avoiding situations where evacuees are refused shelter by the schools, which happened in previous evacuation operations.

“During past calamities, the city government always had a hard time asking some school principals to allow us to lodge evacuees at public schools,” the chief executive said.

The school principals’ reluctance stems from past experiences where school facilities are left damaged or stolen by evacuees, City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) Officer-in-Charge, Ms, Dorothy G. Evangelista Said.

Designating official evacuation centers early will also allow the CSWDO to estimate the volume of relief goods to distribute.

The city government will continue with its policy of providing relief goods only among evacuees staying at officially designated evacuation centers, said Mayor REX.

Early August 2012,   the number of evacuees in Valenzuela City who stayed at 60 evacuation centers reached the highest of 21,943.
