The City Nutrition Council (CNC) partook of the Nutrition Month Celebration by recognizing various supportive groups which joined its “Gulayan Contest,” aimed at promoting urban agriculture to increase the accessibility of nutritious foods to Valenzuelanos.

Home garden, community garden, and school garden are the three categories which comprised CNC’s gardening contest.  Winners were chosen based on their garden layout, variety of crops, harvest, and use of natural fertilizers and pest killers.

Mayor REX Gatchalian mentioned in an interview that, “this urban gardening initiative is truly worth promoting because of its cost-effectiveness. Aside from producing nutritional food, we also get to preserve our environment for the next generation.”

On February 24, 2011, President Benigno S Aquino III issued Executive Order (EO) 26, declaring the implementation of the National Greening Program (NGP) as a government priority program to reduce poverty, promote food security, environmental stability and biodiversity conservation, and enhance climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Areas for planting under the program include forestlands, mangrove and protected areas, ancestral domains, civil and military reservations, urban areas under the greening plan of LGUs, inactive and abandoned mine sites, and other suitable lands of public domain.

The City Agriculture Office considers the gardening contest as a form of compliance to NGP. Currently, this department is monitoring a total of 26 homeowners associations city-wide, which practice and promote urban agriculture.

A total of 15 finalists received cash prizes and certificates of recognition during the awarding ceremonies of the gardening contest held last Wednesday, July 31, during the recognition rites of the city’s nutrition partners as part of the celebration of the Nutrition Month 2013 .

The winners in each category are:
