The City Government of Valenzuela is once again turning to electronic technology to address a local problem - this time, unemployment and underemployment.

The local government during a job fair at the city hall grounds on Thursday, February 13, launched ValenzuelaTrabaho, the first job-matching website in the country run by a local government unit.

The website, which is accessible at www.valenzuelatrabaho.gov.ph, caters exclusively to Valenzuela City-based jobseekers.

Posting of job ads is also free for employers.

Individuals who registered during the two-day job fair, February 13 and 14 received free membership cards from the Job Generation Office, the city government office maintaining the website.

Aside from easy access to the online database of job vacancies, registered users of ValenzuelaTrabaho will also enjoy special privileges such as priority invitations to job fairs and free trainings.

The job matching website uses a filtering system that would match applicants with the prospective employers’ needs.

City Mayor REX Gatchalian said companies posting job vacancy announcements on ValenzuelaTrabaho will be thoroughly screened to protect jobseekers from unscrupulous groups who pose as employers.

The local chief executive also stressed the website will not replace the services of the local Public Employment and Services Offices (PESO).

“The website will prove helpful to jobseekers who want to get in touch with companies by themselves, rather than wait for PESO personnel to call them about a vacancy or whether they are shortlisted for a position. This is also for employers who want to do applicant screening on their own,” Mayor REX said.

Job generation, or easing unemployment, is among the local government’s so-called “five pillars of good governance,” or the five priority programs of the city government, along with health and social services, housing, education and trade and industry.

Based on 2012 data from the Community-Based Monitoring System (CBMS) of the local government, 37.5 percent of the total city population of 575,356 forms the city’s workforce. Around 90 percent of this is employed, while 30.1 percent is underemployed.
