The observance of the National Disaster Consciousness Month kicked off yesterday, July 1, in Valenzuela City with the recognition of the winners of the 1st Disaster Preparedness Skills Olympics and Benchmarking.

In a ceremony at the Motorpool Warehouse, 96 rescuers from different barangays, schools, government agencies, non-government organizations and the divisions of City External Services Office (CESO) were awarded by the Valenzuela City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) with trophies and cash prizes for their performance at the two legs of the friendly skills competition, namely, Basic First Aid and Rescue Boat.

The Basic First Aid competition was held last June 15, with 20 rescue teams of six members each showed how excellent their skills are in administering proper first aid on a “victim” in 10 given scenarios.

The teams were evaluated by volunteers from the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) - Valenzuela City Chapter and members of the Valenzuela Rescue Team for accuracy, speed and team work.

The Traffic Management Office (TMO), the Valenzuela Police Station and the Malinta Rescue Team were hailed as champions of their respective division and bagged trophies and PhP 10,000 each.

Twenty-five teams of six members each had raced against each other on a 200-meter distance across the Polo River in Barangay Poblacion during the Rescue Boat Competition held last June 22.

The champions on this category also received the same amount of cash prizes.  They are the Public Safety Division, the Charlie Company of the Second Battalion of the Philippine Army Reserve and the Pariancillo Villa Rescue Team who registered the fastest time of 2 minutes and 31 seconds.

Director of Valenzuela City Rescue Team and Officer-in-charge of the Disaster Preparedness Division, Dr. Antonio Arnaldo foresee the Skills Olympics to “enhance the vital role of each participant in handling different disasters and emergencies in the city.”

The event is also meant to foster camaraderie among community rescuers, Arnaldo added.
