Security in Valenzuela City steps up as more streetlights have been installed in selected communities last saturday, June 29.
A total of 32 streetlights have been installed by the City Engineering Office in various communities, through the local government unit’s street-lighting project dubbed as, “Pailaw sa Barangay,” a brainchild project of outgoing mayor, now Valenzuela City District 1 Representative, Cong. WIN Gatchalian.
The thrust of the project is to boost peace and order by making inner roads in the city more accessible and to make the constituents feel safer in their own communities at night. Ms. Jennifer Francisco, a resident of one of the initial beneficiary communities, the Enrique Compound, is thankful that they, especially those who go home from work in the evening, will now feel secured because well-lit streets can deter petty criminals.
Each set of streetlight fixture uses a 23-watt compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) which consumes less power than the 70-watt high pressure sodium (HPS) lamps used in MERALCO streetlights.
The monthly electricity bill that will be incurred by each streetlight will be paid for by the city government. Unlike the MERALCO streetlights which are charged with a fixed monthly rate of PhP 472 per month, the local government-installed streetlights will be charged for its actual power consumption.
Congressman WIN reminded the residents during the streetlight inauguration in Villa Angeles, “to maintain the upkeep of the streetlights, and to refrain from the illegal practice of “jumper” or power pilferage.” He added that, “the city government pays the electric bills for the streetlights with the taxpayers’ money and jumpers make it unfair for those who pay their dues.”
The recently completed streetlight installations comprise the first phase of the project with a total cost of PhP 186,225.54. Former City Engineering Office Officer-in-Charge, Ms. Praceli Nelson said that more streetlights will be installed at different communities in the city.
Mayor REX Gatchalian said that the project is “reflective of the city’s reputation as a model local government unit on effective governance and excellent public service” which he is committed to pursue. It can be recalled that in 2011, Valenzuela City topped all local government units in the 1st Meralco Luminaries Awards.
The six communities which already benefited from the street lighting project are Villa Angeles in Barangay Pasolo; Enrique Compound in Palasan; Becona Compound and Samahang Kapatiran ng Mahabang Parang ng Bignay in Bignay; and Bagong Pag-asa Neighborhood Association and Damayan Neighborhood Association in Paso de Blas.
