The Filipino Pride Pound for Pound King Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao remained victorious in the eyes of thousands of Valenzuelanos against the American challenger Timothy Bradley during the free live viewing of their match beamed directly from the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.
City Mayor WIN Gatchalian, who joined the crowd at the Polo Covered Court in Barangay Poblacion, anticipated earlier that the fight would be an early celebration of the Independence Day for the Filipinos and Valenzuelanos who watched at the venue of their choice.
From last year’s two venues, the local government has doubled the number to four to accommodate more Pacquiao supporters. The big screen venues include Arty Covered Court in Barangay Lawang Bato, Our Lady of Lourdes Gymnasium, and Tañada Homeowners Association (THOA) Covered Court both in Barangay Gen. T. de Leon.
Valenzuelanos displayed the same level of confidence as when they came to support Pacman in his previous fights. They witnessed how the People’s Champ’s power punches pounded Bradley into a distasteful dessert.
The controversial split decision, scoring 115-113, 113-115 and 113-115 from the three judges, did not deter Valenzuelano boxing fanatics’ belief that Pacman won the fight as observed on the LED screens set up for their pleasure. Now, most of them cannot wait for November for their hero to pulverize Bradley into a knocked out victory, which the City Government, no doubt, is also going to offer for live viewing.
The City Government has been supporting Pacquiao in his fights through sponsorship of free live screenings since his non-title welterweight bout against the Golden Boy Oscar Dela Hoya in December of 2008. “We know that Pacquiao’s victory is victory to the whole nation. We give Valenzuelanos the chance to celebrate that victory. They do not have to travel much, we bring the fight closer to where they are and we celebrate as one,” Mayor WIN said.
Unconvinced that the time to retire is fast approaching for the People’s Champ, surely Valenzuela City would not be split in witnessing Pacman’s reemergence this November, whether it is against Bradley or another opponent..
